{ movie magic } To be perfectly blunt…

I finally got round to watching The Young Victoria recently. And instantly fell in love.
The acting is wonderful, I’ve always had a bit of a girl crush on Emily Blunt (have you seen her in The Jane Austen Book Club? She’s brilliant), Miranda Richrdson is always fantastic, and Paul Bettany, swoon!

The writing is wonderful, Julian Fellowes always delivers the goods, but best of all is the hair, make up and costumes (but then I would say that). Just sublime. It’s easy to associate the Victorian period with the end of Victoria’s reign when her beloved Albert had died and grief and mourning where the biggest influences in her, and her nations, life. Hairstyles were less elaborate and decorative (and rather less flattering!), railings were painted black, and clothes became increasingly sober in style.

But what this film brings to life so beautifully is her ascension to the thrown, as a young woman, vibrant, full of life, falling head over heels in love with a young Albert and getting to grips with her position, challenging her advisors to bring about social, political and industrial change.

But, the film is first and foremost a romance. And a beautifully crafted one at that.
Watch it.
I order you!
