{ vanity fair } skin deep…

In the old days, when life was sweet, when youth was on my side and I got a paycheck at the end of each month, I used to have pretty good skin, and people would often ask me what products I used. My answer was always the same, ‘I don’t deserve the skin I have, I never take my make up off at night and don’t drink enough water, so it must be genetic. Whatever you do, DO NOT do as I do’.

These days, with the uncertainty of self-employment (which, of course, I secretly love), and the ravages of age (not to mention the neglect detailed above), it’s not quite so perfect. It really is true that in in your 20s you have the skin you were born with and in your 30s you have the skin you deserve!!

That said, I have found my dream regime which I find works wonders for my skin. I know this to be true, because when I started running out of products and money at the same time, my skin was the first casualty. So much so that people who know me actually thought I was having an allergic reaction and would constantly ask what was wrong with my face. Nice. But that’s a whole other therapy session. My point is, here are the products that I think it’s worth investing in. Just because they work wonders for me, doesn’t mean they’ll turn your life around, but if you’re still hunting for that perfect product, you could do worse than give these kids a spin…

Cleansing Oil by Nude. This stuff is gooooooooooood. You may be put off by the price, but you only need a small amount, so a bottle lasts for ages. All Nude products are free from parabens, sulphates, mineral oils and all the other gunk that can make a girl uneasy about putting it on her skin. I have to admit that that’s not a priority for me, but it might be to you. They also do an eye serum which has instant results. And I mean instant. But I had to draw the line on crazy spending somewhere, it’s £60 a bottle!

I got turned on to cleansing with oils by Liz Earle products, her Hot Cloth cleanser is a best seller and constantly tops polls of best cleansers. A lot of people baulk at the idea of cleansing with oil, especially those with oily skin, but as a girl with a shiny face, I am here to tell you, it’s the way forward! Shu Umera’s Balancing cleansing oil is also a great oil cleanser.

Dermalogica Daily Microfoliant. This is a true cult beauty product. And quite rightly so. The first time I used this product, people actually noticed. Crazy right? One scrub and people were commenting on my glowing skin. No more persuasion needed. I’ll take 2!

Garnier Nutritionist Daily Renewing Serum. I cannot remember the purchasing process behind this one. It’s not the kind of skin care I usually go for, too middle of the road. I tend to head for either end of the spectrum, organic, natural based products, or dermatologist, science based products. This one sits too comfortably in the middle for me. But it ended up in my basket somehow, and once it ended up on my face there was no going back. It’s moisturizing, glow-inducing, refining and energizing all at once. And that’s good enough for me.

Dr. Nick Lowe Supercharged SPF 15 Day Cream. It should go without saying that we should all be wearing a moisturizer with a minimum SPF of 15. And we all want a moisturizer that truly quenches the skin, sinks in easily and doesn’t leave us with an oil slick instead of a face. Well, here it is. Enjoy!

Of course, the other secret to good skin is a good foundation, but that’s a whole other post.

And that’s about the end of my skin care rambling and raving. Take my word for it, or take it with a pinch of salt.
Either way, here’s looking at you kid…
