{ notes on style } on the red carpet at the Emmy’s…

Just when the London summer (or lack thereof) threatens to drag a girl down into the deepest of doldrums, along comes a flock of La-La land beauties, trussed up in their finest and sparkling all over the place. Thank you very much, 62nd Annual Primetime Emmy’s for what we are about to receive…
There were a couple of big trends on the red carpet last night, most notable of which was the sea of navy blue. This just happens to be my favourite red carpet colour, so I was squealing all over the place last night as they tripped down the red carpet in ruffles, sequins and pleats of inky darkness…

Jane Krakowski in Escada  // Lea Michele in Oscar de la Renta
Lea Michele has made herself a red carpet favourite in a very short space of time, and she didn’t disappoint last night. Her casual, youthful two tone hair was the perfect foil for her swirling ruffles and statement necklace from Lorraine Schwartz.
Jane Krakowski looked stunning in her textured Escada gown, and she managed to tick a couple of other smaller trends off her list with her one shouldered neckline, shoulder detailing and belted waist.

Julie Bowen in J. Mendel // Jayma Mays in Burberry Prorsum
Both looking fabulous, and both, like Lea Michele, keeping the hair casual and slightly mussed up. Julie looks particularly great here with a minimal amount of accessories meaning the dress and it’s detail do all the talking.
Kim Kardashian in Marchesa // Amber Riley in Melissa Masse
Both girls look absolutely gorgeous. Kim’s hair and make up is among my favourite from the night, her skin looked beyond flawless and the swept up “greecian” hair… well with bone structure like that it would be rude not to.
Mariska Hargitay in Vera Wang // Elizabeth Moss in Donna Karan
Two beautiful brunettes in shades of stone with simple details and pared down jewels. Divine, we’re putty in their hands!
Gugu Mbatha-Raw // Rose Byrne in Gucci
The gold detail on Rose’s gown is classic Gucci, very reminiscent of their 1996 A/W collection. It’s got Tom Ford’s name all over it, except that it doesn’t…odd.
Eva Longoria Parker in Robert Rodriguez // Kelly Osbourne in Tony Ward Couture
Black was another big hit on the red carpet, despite the California sunshine. Eva & Kelly both looked great in textured black. Kelly would have been my winner here, but her contribution to the fashion commentary on E!’s coverage was decidedly frosty, she didn’t seem to have anything nice to say about anyone, so she looses 10 points!
Edie Falco in Bottega Veneta // Angela Kinsey in Romona Keveza
Anna Paquin in Alexander McQueen // Heidi Klum in Marchesa
Anna is most definitely in my top 3 in this stunning McQueen gown. The hair, the accessories, the husband… me oh my. As for Heidi, I’m not sure about shorter gowns on the red carpet, but with legs like that you can hardly blame the woman for wanting to show them off.
Wanda Sykes in Zuhair Murad // Claire Danes in Giorgio Armani Privé
Wanda Sykes looks pretty good overall, the colour and texture of her dress really suits her, but the angle of this photo is doing nothing for the shape of her boobs!
Clare Danes looks absolutely divine in her dress,  the simple shape & neckline have all the more impact fro the lack of accessories. I only wish her hair wasn’t quite so yellow, and her skin wasn’t quite so bronzed. Her fair complexion has always been one of the things that makes her so beautiful and ethereal, the bottle of fake tan she’s used is doing nothing for her.

Connie Britton in Burberry // Maria Menounos in Ralph & Russo

Jennifer Carpenter // Paula Abdul in Dolce & Gabbana
I cannot for the life of me find out where Jennifer’s dress is from, but I sure as hell like it!
Jenna Fischer in Versace  // Jenna Ushkowitz
Olivia Munn in Zac Posen // Kristen Quintral in Heike Jarick
Emily Deschanel in Max Azria Atelier // Nancy O’Dell

Jane Lynch in Ali Rahimi // Kyra Sedgwick in Monique Lhuillier
Two “older” ladies showing the kids how it’s done. Kyra in particular looks outstanding, the colour works so well on her and the shape and texture along with her boho centre parting and soft waves makes for an overall look that’s extremely flattering.
Katrina Bowden in BCBG Max Azria // Christina Hendricks in Zac Posen
Hmmmm, still kind of on the fence with Christina Hendricks. She’s absolutely breathtaking, there’s no denying I’ve got a full on girl crush on her, but I can’t help feeling that if you took away the flame red hair and milky white décolletage you’d be left with a bit of an old lady lavender dress. Thoughts?

Toni Collette in Valentino // Kristen Wiig
Love, love, love these two. Unusual, original and striking. Both women look absolutely beautiful, and I would kill for Kristen’s dress, where ever it’s from?!
January Jones in Atelier Versace // Tina Fey in Oscar de la Renta
These two both got lots of coverage last night, Tina because she really hit the spot this time round, and January because so many people hated her dress. What’s wrong with people?! She looks fabulous! The colour is to die for, the detailed pleating is amazing and most importantly she’s taken a risk. Bravo Miss Jones!
Heather Morris // Dianna Agron in Carolina Herrera
The Glee ladies really hit it out of the ballpark, starting with the divine Miss Michele, and finishing with heather in beautiful gold and a flash of red lips, to Dianna Agron looking demure and doll-like in Carolina Herrera.
And there you have it folks. Who were your winners & losers of the evening?

whew, what a roundup, well done! I enjoyed having a look at the photos, making my my opinion and then having to see what you said about it…pretty close matches! I think you’re right about Christina Hendricks…not a fan of that dress…saved by her own head and face, which is ughm nice? And I am in a ‘pro’ january jones dress column. It’s not my typical taste, but I actually think she rocked it well…and I know i shouldn’t comment on hair or makeup, because frankly i’m useless and you’re a, ughm, pro…but I think what I liked about January and Diana etc. was the nudeness of makeup (especially on the lips). Not sure how you do it exactly, but I love it!

Yes, you’re so right Brittany, some great “nude” faces going on last night. Working on a beauty round up and some product tips, so watch this space!
